Prophecy as we read in Ephesians 4:11 seems to be a temporary gift Jesus Christ gave for setting the foundation of the church as in Ephesians as 2:20. The prophets preached messages from the Lord to the early believers. Prophet’s normally reveal new messages and truth from God and some times they predict, read Acts 11:28 and 21:10. This is so because the early believers didn't have the whole Bible. For example when Satan was tempting Jesus in Mathew chapter 4, both of them were quoting the old testament meaning all the 27 books of the new testament were still in formation. The New Testament prophets “filled the gap” by proclaiming God’s message to the people who would not have access to it.
Do we still need prophets today if God's full revelation and all the words of each prophets are found in the Bible?
If Prophets were the base or foundation of the early church, are we still in the process of building the foundation? If God has already revealed his prophecy in the Bible, do we still need a prophet to read it for us? No! May be we need a teacher or a Pastor to explain it. What about the holy Spirit Jesus promised to help us?
Remember, the last book of prophecy, the book of Revelation was to be sent to all Churches by John. It didn't require a prophet to deliver it because the words are still inspired even if it isn't a special person (prohet) to deliver it.
Therefore who ever claims to be speaking for God should be measured with what the Bible says. 1 John 4:1 reads, “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21 declares, “Do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good.” Still If it agrees with the Bible, pray for wisdom to discern as to how a message applies (2 Timothy 3:16-17; James 1:5).
